From Ruins to Routes: Rethinking Heritage through Narrative Trails

How can archaeological sites become more than isolated points on a map? Our CHNT31 session “From Ruins to Routes: Interpreting Heritage through Narrative Trails (and Communities)” explores how cultural routes can turn fragmented heritage into meaningful, shared experiences.

Cultural trails are not just physical connections — they are narrative spaces where history is interpreted and brought to life. By combining routes with digital tools, storytelling formats, and participatory approaches, they open new ways of engaging with the past.

At the core lies a key question: how can complex archaeological knowledge be translated into accessible, place-based narratives without losing its depth? And how can this be achieved together with local communities?

The session presents conceptual approaches and practical examples, highlighting tools such as augmented reality and inclusive design, while emphasising co-creation and participation.

Join us to explore how ruins can become routes — and how heritage can be experienced and shaped together.
